New Unauthorized Turkmen Translation Found!
@kanto_2_hogwarts, who brought the Bengali Precursor to my attention, located a Turkmen translation! It was published in 2012 by the Turkmen State Publishing Service. Given the legitimacy of a state-sponsored publisher and this little blurb on the copyright page:
Blair Partnership bilen ylalaşylan aýratyn saýlanyldy
“Rights licensed by Blair Partnership”
it’s worth considering that whether this was an authorized translation. Succinctly, it’s not. Although the copyright page attributes copyright to J.K. Rowling, it has none of the other required elements. The ISBN that they printed on the book—978-0-99-722549-1—is invalid. The final check-digit is incorrect and it is incorrectly hyphenated. Most likely, they took this valid ISBN-10: 0997225491 and just prepended 978 and did not recalculate the check-digit. 978-0-9972254-9-5 would be a valid ISBN; however, the -0- indicates that it is governed by the English-language governing agency. It’s not impossible that is still legitimate, but it is unusual, particularly for a state publisher. The really damning fact is that 9972254 is a assigned to another organization, Wholesome Vision LLC, registered in Wyoming. It appears that ISBNs for Turkmenistan are governed by the Russian agency.
Unauthorized, undoubtedly, but a welcome addition to TheList nonetheless!
